Skills Workshop

Information

This workshop addresses a common challenge in epilepsy research: many investigators entering the field bring expertise from other disciplines but lack hands-on experience with in vivo electrophysiology and behavioral monitoring techniques. This practical skills workshop provides step-by-step guidance on establishing chronic video-EEG recording in rodent models of epilepsy, including selecting and purchasing the necessary equipment, supplies, ad software, as well as proper electrode placement to obtain high-quality EEG signals. Participants also learn methods for seizure monitoring, EEG data management, and analysis approaches ranging from basic quantification of epileptiform spikes and seizures to advanced machine-learning-based analyses. The second half of the workshop focuses on Motion Sequencing (MoSeq), an emerging, unbiased approach for annotating and quantifying rodent behavior from video data. Participants learn how MoSeq can be used to assess seizures, behavioral alterations, and epilepsy-related comorbidities, and will receive practical guidance on the hardware, software, and workflows needed to implement this powerful behavioral analysis platform in their own laboratories.
Learning Objective 1
Implement video-EEG and MoSeq approaches in their own laboratories
Learning Objective 2
List the key components and software needed to set up video-EEG and MoSeq
Learning Objective 3
Use video-EEG and MoSeq in their own research programs to generate new insights into the causes or consequences of epilepsy
